What Thread Does

- Email โ For deduplication and account access
- Address โ Street, city, ZIP (for district verification)
- District โ Derived from your address via geocoding
- County โ Derived from your address
- Intent level โ Whether you're monitoring, considering, or committed
- Reason โ Optional comment explaining your support
- Tagged bills โ Legislation you cited as relevant
How We Use Your Data
- District verification โ We geocode your address to confirm you're in the relevant district for district-scoped issues
- Viability counting โ We aggregate intent to show whether an issue has enough support to be viable
- Account access โ Your email lets you view and manage your signed issues
- Communication โ If you opt in, we may notify you about issue updates
What's Public
By default, we display:
- Aggregated counts โ Total supporters, breakdown by intent level
- Reasons/comments โ Your comment may appear in the public feed, attributed to "Resident, [District]"
We do not publicly display your name, email, or street address unless you explicitly opt in.
Data Sharing
Thread's dataset โ named, district-verified civic intent โ may be shared with:
- Campaign organizers โ If an issue reaches viability, organizers may access supporter data to coordinate actual signature collection
- Researchers โ Aggregated, anonymized data for civic engagement research
We do not sell your personal information to advertisers or data brokers.
Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as the issue remains active, plus a reasonable period for historical records. You can request deletion of your data by contacting us.
